MADRID / RankWire.AI / – Mainland Spain faced its hottest summer since official records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius during June, July, and August. Official data issued by the national meteorological agency verified that seasonal temperatures surpassed the previous record set in 2025 by 0.3 degrees Celsius and went beyond the 1991–2020 climate baseline by 2.4 degrees Celsius. This summer became the hottest on record as intense heatwaves affected two-thirds of the meteorological season.

The State Meteorological Agency’s published data shows that Spain encountered an extraordinary total of 61 heatwave days over the three months. This figure considerably exceeds the previous record of 41 heatwave days during the summer of 2022. Analysts noted that all ten of Spain’s hottest summers have taken place in the 21st century, highlighting an accelerating trend of long-term warming across southern Europe.

This extreme heat had a profound impact on public health and municipal infrastructure in both northern and southern regions. Epidemiological data from the Carlos III Health Institute estimates that over 5,000 deaths directly resulted from the extreme heat between June and August. This marks the highest total recorded since the agency began standardized heat-related mortality monitoring in 2015.

Prolonged high temperatures also caused severe environmental issues across national forests and rural farmlands. Data from the European Forest Fire Information System indicates that nearly 296,000 hectares of land were lost to wildfires by early September. The scorching summer, coupled with extended dry spells, drained regional reservoirs and posed significant challenges for agricultural irrigation and hydroelectric plants.

Weather stations recorded that these exceptional thermal conditions extended beyond the usual summer timeframe. On September 2, a station in El Granado, in the southwest, measured a peak of 45.7 degrees Celsius, tying the national September temperature record. Forecasters confirmed that high temperatures persisted from late May through early September across several autonomous communities.

Climate Data Highlights Rapid Warming Trends in the 21st Century

Following these official climate findings, government ministers presented the data to parliament to advocate for stronger environmental policies. Minister for the Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera urged parliamentary groups to back comprehensive laws focused on climate adaptation, emergency infrastructure, and drought resilience strategies.

Meteorological agencies and health authorities will continue to monitor temperature trends and environmental impacts throughout the autumn. Official reports and environmental data will remain accessible via government portals as authorities assess long-term adaptation measures. Regional agencies are also coordinating resource management plans to address ongoing agricultural and ecological challenges.
