BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – In Africa, during June 2026, the European Commission approved a €2.3 million emergency humanitarian package aimed at addressing cholera outbreaks across four nations. Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad will benefit from this support, which will fund treatment services, disease monitoring, access to safe water, and sanitation initiatives. Authorities in the region continue to face ongoing outbreaks in West and Central Africa, with Nigeria experiencing the most significant surge among these countries, especially in Borno State.

EU channels €2.3 million into Africa cholera response
Cholera response funding targets treatment, clean water, sanitation and disease surveillance.

The emergency aid includes €1.5 million designated for Nigeria, enabling response teams to be deployed and cholera treatment supplies to be distributed. It will also assist in water treatment at communal points and within households. The funding allows health workers to enhance disease surveillance in hard-to-reach communities. Additional measures involve case management, public awareness campaigns, and community outreach, all aimed at curbing transmission and improving access to care in regions with high infection rates.

Data from the World Health Organization indicates a considerable increase in reported cholera cases during 2026. As of June 28, 90,049 cases have been documented across 18 countries within the African Region, with 1,528 deaths recorded. Nigeria alone reported 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities, including 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths in June. More than 95% of Nigeria’s cases are concentrated in Borno State, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno being among the most severely impacted areas.

Emergency funding enhances outbreak containment efforts

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 as part of the aid package. These funds will support healthcare provision, vaccination campaigns, sanitation projects, and access to clean water. Additionally, it will bolster disease detection capabilities, community outreach programs, and safe burial practices where necessary. According to data up to June 28, there have been 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. The allocated resources will assist local teams in quickly identifying cases and maintaining treatment services during the ongoing outbreak.

Cameroon is set to receive €100,000 to bolster response efforts in affected areas, covering additional personnel, medicines, treatment facilities, and oral rehydration points. As of June 28, Cameroon reported 108 cases and six deaths. Chad will benefit from €200,000 allocated toward sanitation, water access, community surveillance, and patient care, with 109 cases and three deaths reported during the same period. The entire €2.3 million emergency fund is distributed among these four nations.

Nigeria sees notable rise in June cholera cases

Across 12 African countries, authorities documented 27,954 new cholera cases in June, marking a 95% increase from May. The region also reported 284 fatalities related to cholera during that month. Nigeria led in new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The sharp increase in Nigeria was primarily centered in Borno State, where conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and seasonal rains have compounded health challenges in communities affected by the outbreak.

Cholera is characterized by severe diarrhea caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water carrying Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Without prompt treatment, serious infections can rapidly cause dehydration. The EU’s aid focuses on immediate needs in the four recipient countries by providing treatment capacity, disease surveillance, vaccination where applicable, sanitation improvements, and access to safer water. It also emphasizes community engagement in the affected regions. The €2.3 million package supplies urgent resources to bolster both national and humanitarian responses to the persistent regional cholera crisis.
