European Union mobilizes aircraft and crews to combat ongoing wildfires across Europe

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – As wildfires continue to spread across various regions of Europe, countries on the continent are ramping up their joint firefighting efforts. On the continent, Belgium and Spain requested aid via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, overwhelmed by fires straining their national resources. In response, aircraft, helicopters, and ground crews have been deployed in both nations. Authorities are also utilizing satellite imagery to monitor fire zones and assist in emergency planning across multiple European areas.

EU wildfire support brings aircraft, crews and satellite mapping to affected regions.

Belgium has received two rescEU firefighting aircraft from Sweden to support operations in the Hautes Fagnes region. Germany and Norway contributed two helicopters each, while Dutch aircraft have also been involved in the firefighting efforts. The latest assessments indicate that over 3,000 hectares have been affected by the blaze. Belgian emergency personnel, military units, farmers, and international crews are working across the impacted zones, with authorities maintaining restrictions around roads and water sources used by responders.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles had participated in the Belgian firefighting operation. Ground teams focused on accessible areas, while aircraft targeted segments of the fire that remained hard to reach. Farmers assisted in maintaining water supplies for emergency teams operating around the fire zone. Residents of Sourbrodt have been permitted to return home, whereas some residents of Küchelscheid continue to face access restrictions due to ongoing fire conditions.

French firefighting teams bolster efforts in Spain’s Aragón region

Spain received 104 firefighters and 36 vehicles from France to enhance firefighting operations in Aragón. At the time of European support arrival, approximately 16,000 hectares had already been burned in the region. Authorities in Aragón issued red alerts for 14 fire danger zones on Aug. 18, up from eight the day before. Officials also highlighted the presence of extremely dry fuels across several central and northern zones, further straining crews already battling active fires and monitoring vulnerable areas.

Satellite mapping support from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service has played a key role, providing rapid satellite imagery to response teams in Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. These maps help emergency managers assess burned regions and locate active fires. The European Commission manages international assistance offers through the civil protection system, enabling participating nations to transfer personnel and equipment across borders when requested by national authorities.

European cooperation supports multiple national fire emergencies

Ahead of the 2026 wildfire season, Europe maintained a joint reserve comprising 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters. Authorities also stationed 777 firefighters from 14 countries in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. This shared system allows governments to seek help when their own capacities are overstretched. Emergency coordinators then match these requests with available aircraft, crews, vehicles, and other resources supplied by member states.

The current situation involves multiple separate fire incidents across different countries rather than a single cross-border event. Belgium continues to depend on aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and local logistical support in Hautes Fagnes. Meanwhile, Spain has incorporated French firefighters and vehicles into its firefighting efforts in Aragón. Across Europe, emergency services are also utilizing satellite data to monitor affected zones. By the end of July, the continent’s burned area was roughly 2.5 times larger than the typical level expected at this point in the year.
