The Austrian firm, founded in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, specializes in spacecraft propulsion technology. Its propulsion systems have successfully completed over 8,000 hot-fire tests under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions. The project also benefited from roughly 750,000 euros in Austrian government support to advance its technological development.
Additional partners contribute specialized systems crucial to the satellite’s navigation monitoring capabilities. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology designed to detect and analyze interference on global navigation satellite systems. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides further hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency also backs the project via its Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercial space technologies in operational environments as part of demonstration missions.
First Austrian military satellite mission to be launched
BEACONSAT’s focus is on collecting data related to interference patterns rather than carrying weapons or engaging in offensive operations. It will monitor signals from orbit, identifying trends associated with jamming and spoofing activities. In 2026, officials announced that the Defence Ministry’s contribution to the project was approximately 1 million euros. Following its deployment in 2027, the satellite will operate initially as a research and technology demonstration platform.
The February 2027 launch is anticipated to inaugurate Austria’s first military satellite mission. SpaceX will deliver BEACONSAT into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, as part of the established launch plan. Once in orbit, the satellite will gather data on disruptions affecting satellite navigation services and transmit this information for analysis.
