    Record-breaking European drought linked to climate change according to new study

    London / EuroWire / – In Europe, during the summer of 2023, a joint scientific investigation underscores how human-induced global warming is directly responsible for the unprecedented dryness affecting the continent. The research provides clear evidence that climate change is intensifying drought conditions across europe. Researchers from around the world determined that rising temperatures are the primary driver behind the severely parched environment, surpassing the influence of mere decreases in rainfall. Following a historic heatwave in June, the region is now grappling with intense wildfires, strict water restrictions, and diminishing waterways. The study reveals that today’s heightened temperatures accelerate soil and water moisture loss, significantly increasing the chances of extreme aridity. Even though spring rainfall fell below average levels, the heat caused by climate change has greatly intensified the overall drought impact.

    The World Weather Attribution team released the research showing how increasing temperatures actively diminish natural water sources. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not mainly driven by low rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere creating greater land moisture deficits. This means that even regions with stable rainfall patterns face escalating drought risks. Scientists explain that each one-degree Celsius rise in temperature allows the atmosphere to hold about seven percent more water vapor. This increased capacity results in more rapid evaporation from soil and vegetation, contributing to widespread dryness across the landscape.

    Using extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, scientists measured how much more likely these dry conditions are now compared to a world 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. The results indicated that soils in western Europe are five times more likely to be extremely dry today than in a scenario without human-driven warming. Meanwhile, in eastern europe, these same soil moisture deficits have become 11 times more probable. The analysis also found that the high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe has increased about 80 times in likelihood. Consequently, rainfall deficits that once would not have caused serious drought are now leading to significantly drier soils.

    The Link Between Rising Temperatures and Soil Desiccation

    Dominik Schumacher, a scientist at ETH Zurich, emphasized that the trend of abnormal soil drying already begins in spring, well before summer arrives. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, drawing moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the soil itself. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for extensive wildfires. The swift drying process turned the land highly combustible, contributing to severe fires across several countries. The study confirms that climate change is transforming traditional weather patterns into hazardous cycles of drought and fire in europe.

    The agricultural industry is experiencing unprecedented stress due to widespread soil moisture loss. The drought is severely impacting farming communities, resulting in historic crop failures across various borders. France is projected to have its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, signaling a major disruption to regional food supplies. At the same time, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortages, compounded by ongoing global conflicts, could lead to rising food prices and disproportionately harm low-income families.

    Heat and Water Vapor Capacity Growth

    Hydrological impacts worsen the economic repercussions, with abnormally low river levels disrupting vital cargo routes. Major shipping routes on key waterways have already seen interruptions, emphasizing the increasing severity of water scarcity across europe. Declining river flows threaten energy production, especially in regions reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that June 2023 was the hottest June ever recorded in western europe. Many nations have started implementing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve shrinking supplies.

    Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to climb, drought conditions could become even more common. Experts highlight that the current evaporative intensities are happening at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate risks posed by current emission levels. If global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius, as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative events could double. Without urgent and substantial emissions reductions, climate experts warn that europe faces a future of increasingly relentless, scorching, and arid summers.
