Wind Power Set to Break Records in Europe with 8.8 GW Installed in First Half of 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is heading toward a historic year for wind energy expansion after adding 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the first six months of 2026. This represents a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. Updated industry figures published by Wind Europe reveal that the turbines brought online can supply enough electricity to serve roughly 7 million European households, while also replacing fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. The continent’s vigorous installation activity over the summer months is fueling its energy transition efforts, putting Europe on track for a record-breaking wind power year.

Europe on track for record year in wind power with 8.8 GW added
Industrial wind farm installations operate across green agricultural fields in rural Europe.

Germany led regional growth in the first half of 2026 by adding 3.4 GW, accounting for about 40% of all new wind capacity across Europe. Over 500 turbines were installed throughout Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Other European countries like Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France also reported significant capacity gains. Notably, Ukraine added more than 400 MW of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict, while Belgium contributed an additional 60 MW to its grid.

WindEurope’s Autumn Report forecasts that total European wind additions will reach 24 GW by the end of 2026, setting a new milestone for annual installation volumes. These projections see this phase of growth as a key stepping stone toward a broader industry goal of 30 GW in annual capacity increases during the 2030s. During the first half of 2026, capital investment in new wind projects in Europe hit 9 billion euros, with governments awarding more than 17 GW via competitive auctions. An additional 26 GW are scheduled for tendering before the year concludes.

Europe Nears a Record Year for Wind Power Installations

Despite these impressive figures, representatives of industry associations issued warnings about ongoing structural bottlenecks that threaten long-term growth. Germany accelerated its development by approving over 9 GW of new onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026, yet permitting volumes decreased in several key markets, including Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. While the wind sector continues its expansion, industry leaders emphasize that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder future project timelines.

In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten noted that 2026 might set a new record for wind installations but warned that such momentum cannot be taken for granted. She stressed that government decisions on permitting procedures, auction structures, grid infrastructure development, and industrial electrification in the coming months will be crucial in determining whether growth continues at the current pace.

Trade Group Highlights Five Key Policy Directions for EU Leaders

To sustain current growth rates, the industry association outlined five essential policy priorities for the European Union and national governments. These include streamlining permitting processes and expanding regional transmission networks. It also advocates for channeling revenues from the Emissions Trading System into industrial electrification projects and setting a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current forecasts, European wind capacity is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, providing 27% of the EU’s total electricity needs.

European energy regulators and federal ministries are anticipated to review these recommendations in upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of the winter heating season. Official trade portals will continue to track national turbine installations and auction outcomes, ensuring progress aligns with the EU’s decarbonization targets.
