The interim standards specify detailed requirements for wiring, mounting, fire protection, labels, and user instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic electrical systems, finding stable operation under controlled conditions. Researchers observed no sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable heat effects. The study also noted differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. Public consultation supports phased market entry

Over 85% of respondents supported the interim product specifications, with most also backing the proposed plug amendment. Retailers have prepared for the introduction of this new product category ahead of the August launch. The rules encompass small solar kits suitable for balconies, gardens, and other outdoor areas, which could be ideal for homes unable to install traditional rooftop panels. Systems using the new connection method cannot operate legally until August 27. After that date, only approved products with an 800-watt limit can connect through a standard household socket.
